Poetry Books about Animals

Once you start looking, you’ll find that the topic of animals is a major one in children’s poetry and is the focus of many poems and collections. There are even whole anthologies of animal poetry as you’ll see below. Be sure and look for more poetry books about dinosaurs, cats, dogs, birds, and insects (featured in additional lists).

The list begins:

Ackerman, Diane. 2003. Animal Sense. New York: Alfred Knopf.

Alarcon, Francisco X. 2008. Animal Poems of the Iguazu: Poems. San Francisco: Children’s Book Press.

Bouchard, Dave. 1996. Voices from the Wild. San Francisco: Chronicle.

Cotner, June, comp. 2002. Bless the Beats: Children’s Prayers and Poems about Animals. New York: SeaStar.

Curry, Jennifer. Ed. 2000. Animal Poems. New York: Scholastic.

Ehlert, Lois. 2008. Oodles Of Animals. San Diego, CA: Harcourt.
